Hampden to Havana: A Creative Journey

May 05, 2025

What do you think of when you think of Cuba. Colors. Art. Music. Old Cars. In the vibrant tapestry of art and culture, many cities stand out. And a person may not automatically link Baltimore and Havana. But while separated by miles and political landscapes and so much more, the essence of creativity and resilience make these two places havens for artists seeking to create and innovate.

Hampden, in Baltimore, has long been a sanctuary for artists. Known for its eclectic spirit and supportive community, Hampden creatives thrive on the idea of making things from the remnants of the past. The city once boasted a bustling population and vibrant neighborhoods, but today, it wrestles with the echoes of its former glory. The decaying buildings that dot the landscape are testaments to history—beautiful structures now in need of revival. Yet, within this decay lies an opportunity for artists to breathe new life into forgotten spaces.

Similarly, Havana is a city steeped in history, with its colorful facades and crumbling architecture telling stories of a bygone era. The streets are filled with a rich cultural heritage, yet many buildings stand in beautiful disrepair, waiting for someone to unlock their potential. In Havana, artists find inspiration in the very fabric of their environment, transforming the remnants of the past into vibrant works of art.

Traveling to Havana has always been a dream of mine. People talk about being in a different time an place - this really appealed to me. When the opportunity arose with some like-minded Hampden creative business owners - it just seemed like a perfect fit.

The spirit and vibrancy of the Cuban fashion and art community is refreshing and exciting - even while revealing the real need there, for the absolute basics. I was so inspired by the spirit of innovation that thrives within the people. Artists support one another on a fundamental level. It’s in this understanding of struggle that artists are able to connect deeply with one another. They recognize the beauty in imperfection and the potential in what others might overlook.

Both cities are steeped in rich histories that inform their current artistic landscapes. Baltimore’s past as an industrial hub and a key player in American history is still palpable in its architecture and cultural institutions. Artists often draw inspiration from the city’s historical narratives, reinterpreting them through a contemporary lens. The juxtaposition of old and new creates a dynamic artistic dialogue that resonates with both residents and visitors.

Havana’s history is equally compelling, shaped by colonial influences, revolution, and resilience. The city’s architecture tells a story of cultural fusion, with Spanish colonial buildings standing alongside Art Deco and modernist designs. Artists in Havana often grapple with themes of identity, memory, and change, using their work to comment on the social and political realities of contemporary Cuba. This rich historical context provides a deep well of inspiration for artists, allowing them to explore complex narratives through their creations.

The romance of the past, the vibrant colors of the Caribbean and the spaces created by the wonder of history have had a big part in imagining the new Havana Collection at LBJ.

The artistic journey from Hampden to Havana is a testament to the unifying power of creativity. It highlights how artists can navigate the complexities of their environments, drawing strength from their communities and histories. In the end, whether through a vibrant mural in Havana or an innovative installation in Hampden, the stories of these cities and their artists create a rich narrative that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit.
